Besides Because

I appreciate N.T. Wright’s thoughts on worship and the importance of letting “because” be integrated with our worship of God–e.g., “I praise you because you’re worthy.” For me, sometimes I’m better off dropping the “because.” Why? Well, “because” that can lead me down a path of praising God only in relation to what he’s done for me–e.g., “I praise you for answering prayer” or “I worship you because you provide for my needs.” It’s important for me to focus on God’s attributes regardless of my relationship with him or my needs. He’s so much more than that. I need to focus on who he is–e.g. “You are holy” or “You are all powerful” or “You are just.”
