God finally seems to give up here. On the brink of unleashing more devastation, He relents. Enough is enough. The purposes will be accomplished in the 7th trumpet. God seems to say, “Let’s get this over with.” One more action is not going to make a difference.
What causes this? Was it the smell of the incense rising on the alter – the prayers of the saints? Was it the cries of the martyrs under the alter – the calls for justice? Or was God’s heart just unwilling to wreak the havoc that the seven thunders would cause on the beloved creation, however broken and evil it might now be? As Dave mentioned Sunday, we don’t get to know the answer to this question. From what we’ve learned about God’s character so far, though, I choose to believe it’s an act of mercy. I could be wrong, I suppose…I don’t know the rest of the story. I’ll risk it, though; this feels like the God I love.
