I don’t know about you, but these passages are starting to scare me. Flaming eyes, brass feet, swords, ten days of afflication…it’s all adding up to something called “the fear of God.” I know that phrase gets tossed around, but for me, these passages are doing what I’d hoped/suspected they would. In a culture that grades on the curve, looks the other way, promotes the religion of “follow your own bliss, do what makes you happy,” and pretty much lives in a giant gray zone, I need to be reminded of the righteous, unyielding, high standards of God. Those standards scare and humble me, but I’m very glad they exist. And I’m glad that Jesus fills in the deficit in my ability to meet those standards.
