In spiritual formation circles, we’re fond of pointing out that you can have your theology exactly right but if you don’t actually love people you’re missing the point. While that is absolutely true, this passage reminds me that the opposite is also true. Here is a church that is doing good works…loving and helping others. However, their theology is more than a little off and Jesus is taking them to task for it. Whether the church members were practicing spiritual fornication by following some errant teaching or they were actually participating in pagan-style worship, it’s obvious that they’re well out of line. It’s a good reminder to me that this spiritual life is indeed a balance – great love and disciplined theology.
