Wow! So I am stuck on Verse 5 of this section. It states “Anyone who conquers will be clothed like this in white robes, and I won’t blot their name out of the book of life.” I just spent 90 minutes reading all kinds of commentaries on the subject of being blotted out of the Book of Life. I am more confused than when I started.
The comments range from: that was only applicable for the Jews stated in the Old (First) Testament, to the Book of Life contains all the names of all humanity and when we don’t receive Christ we are blotted out, to the names are put in when we receive Christ and they are never blotted out, to maybe they can be blotted out. My head is spinning.
In any event it is clear that Jesus is concerned about the church people of Sardis relying on their reputation and resting on their laurels. Verse 1 states, “You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.” So rather than me getting hung up on whether names are blotted out of the book of Life, I am wanting to focus on keeping my spiritual life alive and consistent and not letting it die. I want to focus on shadowing God and staying connected with Christ, through humility, fellowship and submission rather than unrepentance or disingenuous hypocrisy. This way, whether names can or cannot be blotted out, I have done the best I know to ensure that my name will show up on the heavenly roster. How about you?
