The faithful by the glassy sea sing a song declaring God’s undisputed supremacy and primacy in the whole universe. For the audience of Revelation, and indeed for us, this refrain feels foreign and distant. The pagan religion’s dominance of the first century was unequivocal. Today the religion of, “Your religion’s okay, my religion’s okay and we’re all okay,” dominates the landscape. Can you really imagine people saying, “Who will not fear you, Lord, and glorify your name?” Yeah, me neither. We can’t even get unity within the broader Christian church about this issue much less across the whole world.
That’s what gives me hope about this passage. I look forward to the day when the not-quite-awesome competing ideologies are shown for what they really are: not quite awesome. I look forward to God being the clear victor and we as His servants the true followers. No more compromising. No more hiding. No more competing. Justice!
